Welcome to the auction for my 1986 Phase 1 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6. I’ve had this car for a little over six months, but a change in circumstances has meant that I need a car to drive to work in, as of such the 205 now has to go to a new home.
The car has 108,500 on the clock and is finished in Peugeot Cherry Red. I am the thirteenth owner of the car which is now approaching 30 years old. The car has a new MOT which runs until 08/02/17. The car is completely original, it’s had no aftermarket tuning parts or questionable alloys fitted to it at any time so far as I am aware.
During my ownership, I have had the NS/F wheel bearing changed and refreshed the gearbox oil. I have also taken steps to refresh some of the coolant hoses in the engine bay so as they don’t perish and cause a potentially catastrophic failure.
A friend of mine has spent large quantities of his youth working on these cars, and has adjusted the idle and the engine tuned (these need to be done together by a garage with the correct equipment). I have also spent a bit of time adjusting, cleaning and lubricating various components to make sure everything is running as it should. When working on the car, I did notice that a large quantity of the bolts & fixings have been swapped for stainless steel items, making this car rather lovely to work on.
I bought the car from a local fellow who always kept the car garaged and only brought it out on sunny weekends. Speaking with him in transpired that he had spent thousands of pounds at PugRacing, which is the local 205 specialist over in Fordingbridge, getting this car rebuilt:

All work from the above is receipted, and can be checked with the guys at PugRacing if you wish to confirm. You may well note that the work carried out above is from just over two years ago. I feel at this point that it’s worth mentioning that since its MoT in 2013 the car has covered only 3000 miles, so in terms of driving experience, everything’s lovely and fresh – indeed as you can see from the pictures, the rear torsion beam still looks nearly new.
Speaking again with the previous owner, it transpired that the previous phase one interior was not in good condition, so he replaced this with a phase two half leather interior which is still in the car today. At the same time, a replacement red carpet was sourced with a view to tidying up the interior, I am pleased to say this carpet is still very much ‘red’, and has been protected by the included floor mats ever since.
The car has also been resprayed in the original Peugeot Cherry Red and I’ve done all I can to keep the paintwork as clean and shiny as possible; it’s been washed once every two weeks come rain or shine with a collection of Bilt Hamber & Dodo Juice products; the net result is that this is one glossy looking car that is most definitely red rather than pink like most of this age. The original speedline alloys including a spare are still present
I have one set of original keys and a second set that I had cut at Timpsons. The car has original handbooks and brochure (see pictures) lots of receipts and a fully stamped service history showing the low mileage covered throughout the car’s life. Lots of previous MOT’s again indicating the low mileage history.
Being straight up, there are some negatives to the car; there were three advisories on the MoT highlighted due to corrosion:
- Offside front wing corroded, but in a non-prescribed area
- Some corrosion to n/s B pillar, but not holed
- Nearside Front Slight corrosion to chassis rail, but in a non-prescribed area.
I think the easiest fix would be to attach a new front wing and get this sprayed – these are available for about £50 + bodyshop costs. I would advise the other two be handled by a respected metal fabricator; they aren’t in terrible nick and this is the first MoT that they have been highlighted on (feel free to check this on the direct.gov site), so it’s probably early enough to catch them before they cause anything lasting. I will say that on all the areas highlighted above, I have applied Vactan over where necessary – this is a US Navy developed anti-corrosion compound. I would highlight also that there’s some bubbling in front of the rear wings, nothing has been holed and it has been painted over to seal it, but is worth mentioning.
Aside from the above, and as can be seen by the pictures, it’s in very good nick. Truth be told, I don’t really want to sell this car, but I’ve recently moved into a new flat which doesn’t have undercover parking. Whilst the car’s currently living under a cover, it’s not really a long term solution. Unfortunately I’m now having to drive to work in Winchester quite regularly, and I don’t want to put too many miles on the 205. In terms of a part-ex, I’m interested in a Audi TT, or an Alfa GTV V6, both of which will hopefully be more suited to daily duties.
